What would run through your mind if the bathroom was shared and in the hallway of your hotel? For me, this would be a real situation. Let’s rewind to 1907 — back then, you’d have been out of luck and forced to visit a communal bath. And, very lucky to have indoor plumbing.

I love to shout from the rooftops that I’m from Buffalo, NY so imagine my delight when I discovered that Ellsworth Milton Statler transformed the hotel industry by constructing the first permanent Hotel aptly named, The Statler Hotel. The Statler Hotel pioneered modern hotel accommodations, designing the very first hotel rooms, each with its own private bathroom. With the unveiling of his inaugural hotel in Buffalo, New York, Statler offered 300 private bathrooms, revolutionizing guest accommodations.

Fast forward to today, and hotel bathrooms have evolved into luxurious sanctuaries. Imagine spa-like retreats with rainfall showerheads, full seating areas, and mood-enhancing lighting. We can thank my pals over at Kohler for being the leader in the clubhouse on all things innovative in the bathroom.Â
I always find myself clicking the same rebook button for these fabulous hotels. If you ever find yourself in New York, Portofino, or France, trust me and give them a stay.Â

As we bid adieu, remember that the era of the cookie-cutter bathroom is over. Hotels now compete to offer unforgettable experiences, from panoramic views to high-tech gadgets. I prefer the simple luxury bathroom. Nothing complicated. A note to the hospitality industry, If there is a button or a setting, you are just asking for trouble. Luxury for me, is the combination of materials in the room; beautiful stone, well-appointed showers with a showerhead and hand shower, a bench to prop my foot to shave my legs, and plenty of counter space! I like bathrooms to feel warm, so please don’t forget the in-floor heating. Whether you're basking in luxury or marveling at architectural ingenuity, may your bathroom escapades be extraordinary and not shared in the hallway.
